  • Flint-area GM plants awarded $300,000 in grants (Community Impact Grants) to nine nonprofits in Genesee County last month. The funds will support STEAM education and road safety as part of the company’s ongoing community efforts.  MLive
  • The Humane Society of Genesee County will mark 100 years of service on Jan. 8 at its shelter with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m. The centennial event highlights a long legacy of helping animals find forever homes.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Flint’s Holiday Inn Express was evacuated Friday when fire marshals shut the building over fire and life safety hazards — fire alarm issues led to guests being relocated to Red Roof Inn.  ABC 12

  • The Banana Boat Ice Cream Shop on Davison Road will reopen this spring under new management; its new owners are a longtime staff member’s family. After 12 seasons with previous management, the shop is set to continue its sweet traditions.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Cinemark’s BYOB promotion is set for Jan. 18 and 19 in Flint Township—offering up to 400 ounces of popcorn for $5 in any container. Customers can bring a Lowes 5-gallon bucket for unlimited fill or pay $5 for any serving size.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • McLaren Flint welcomed its first baby of 2026 on New Year's Day at 9:24 a.m., and the newborn (19 inches, 7 1/2 lbs) was honored with a special basket by the Labor and Delivery staff.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Hurley Medical Center welcomed Genesee County’s first baby of 2026 on Friday, Jan. 2 when baby Gabriel was born at 2:05 a.m. in Flint, measuring 17 inches and weighing 4 lbs, 14 oz. Parents Seda and Corice Parlor said both mom and baby are doing well.  Mid-Michigan Now
