COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Urban Renaissance Center acquired the former Dort Meat Market in Flint and plans to transform it into the Ubuntu Building as its new central hub. The nonprofit-led redevelopment project is underway with design oversight by FUNchitecture and contract lead Mike Siwek.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint remembers Heather Burnash, a defense attorney and community advocate who died Monday at age 50. Mayor Sheldon Neeley and Flint City Council President Ladel Lewis honored her legacy (she was known for supporting tenants and historic preservation) as a champion for local causes.  ABC 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A portion of the roof at Bendle Middle School collapsed around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, and the building was deemed unoccupiable until an inspection can confirm roof safety; no injuries were reported.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fenton is set to welcome a new Kroger store at Fenton Village Marketplace on Jan. 21, replacing the former Family Farm and Home location. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and a Detroit Pistons player appearance are scheduled for Jan. 22 between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. as part of Kroger’s community launch.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Genesee Intermediate School District and Genesee County Career and College Access Network will host a free FAFSA workshop on Monday, Jan. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the GISD Erwin Davis Education Center (Entrance No. 3) to help students and families claim available financial aid.  Flint Beat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said it will follow the full childhood immunization schedule recommended by experts instead of the federal changes reducing recommended vaccines. Families are urged to follow the complete schedule knowing most vaccines remain covered by insurance.  ABC 12
  • Michigan health officials said Flint families should follow the AAP and AAFP childhood immunization schedules despite the CDC’s new guidance reducing vaccines from 17 to 11. MDHHS clarified that the established schedule remains in place—vaccines still cost nothing under federal programs.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Byron Eagles All Sports Boosters held a benefit on Jan. 6 to support the athletic department at Byron Area Schools + the event raised funds for local school sports.  ABC 12
