COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wade Wines, a Holly resident, rescued a 36-year-old snowmobiler who fell through the ice on Bush Lake on Jan. 4 and was honored with a life-saving award by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office—this event reminds residents to stay cautious on frozen lakes with changing temperatures.  ABC 12
  • On Friday, a large tree from Land Bank property fell in Onquette Woodyard Hightower’s yard and damaged her fence for the third time in six years — raising safety concerns for her grandchildren. Genesee County Land Bank said they will address the issue within 20 to 25 work days.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mrs. Doubtfire, a new musical comedy based on the beloved film, will perform at Whiting Auditorium on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $43 with a discount to $32 for Genesee County residents.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Christmas Eve, a viral video showed 100 inmates at Genesee County Jail joining hands to recite the Lord’s Prayer — a moment Sheriff Chris Swanson said marks positive culture change within the facility through new educational and skills programs.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Flint residents secured a $700K grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to lead a multi-year research program that will use a community-based model (combining local voices and academic expertise) to shape health funding priorities.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Flint Township Planning Commission voted Thursday, Jan. 8 to recommend Ambers Wheat West, a proposed 259-home development north of West Maple Avenue. The plan offers mix homes and keeps 27 percent of the 86-acre site as open space, and it now moves to the township board.  MLive
