- ➤ United Way of Genesee County will host MLK Day of Service on Jan. 19 at Dort Event Center, where 800 volunteers will pack 200,000 meals from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored by local groups & Huntington National Bank, the event honors Dr. King’s legacy through civic action. Flint Beat
- ➤ Former Flint mayor Paul Visser, who served from 1973 to 1975 and led many community initiatives, died on Jan. 8 at 89 — a memorial service is scheduled at Tyrone Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fenton on Friday, Jan. 23 with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m. MLive
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Flint native Evan Baker of Skeleton Pizza Supply Co. is set to eat pizza next to oversized skeletons every weekend in all 50 states in 2026 after earning local support with his Midland post. He began his quest after a Halloween encounter and plans to finish the journey by December. MLive
- ➤ Fred Ross, known from Michael Moore's Roger & Me, died on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Smackover, Arkansas at age 91. Funeral arrangements remain pending. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Jan. 14, Genesee County Jail hosted its 39th I.G.N.I.T.E. graduation, awarding 29 inmates certificates while launching the new Tiny Ivy program for peer-to-peer teaching that aims to cut misconduct and recidivism (Sheriff Chris Swanson said the program gives inmates a new purpose). MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy awarded ($300,000) to Flint Bishop International Airport for PFAS testing, monitoring, and cleanup enhancements. The funding is part of a $9 million grant package to help several Michigan airports address PFAS contamination. Mid-Michigan Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Genesee County Quick Response Team from New Paths addiction treatment center delivers overdose prevention tools and peer support on a 24/7 basis across Flint. The team refills supplies twice a week at local sites including hospitals, gas stations and grocery stores. ABC 12
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m., the Flint Firebirds will host a game against the Windsor Spitfires at the Dort Financial Center and invite fans to join a Flint Coneydog eating contest for a chance at jerseys, pucks + prizes. Mid-Michigan Now
