- ➤ On Monday, community members attended a service at First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church on Beach St. to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — the congregation sang 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' to celebrate his enduring legacy. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ On Saturday, the Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights hosted a teach-in in Flint to educate residents about immigration rights; local immigration attorneys explained the guidelines while community members offered language and grocery support. The group will hold additional sessions on Feb. 21 and March 21. ABC 12
- ➤ Big Brothers Big Sisters held its 20th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mentoring Inspiration Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 19 at St. Michaels Conference and Event Center in Flint — keynote Derrick Britton, a Flint native and retired Air Force Lt. Colonel, discussed his career leading to his role in Genesee County. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ The Community Foundation of Greater Flint is named as one of 25 Community Host organizations for the 2026 Weaver Awards (a project by the Aspen Institute) and will soon share details on local microgrants and community gatherings. MLive
- ➤ A new steel lattice frame has been installed next to Flint's graffiti block at 12th Street and Hammerberg Road, letting community members leave locks in memory of loved ones. The installation offers a permanent tribute after messages on the block were temporary. ABC 12
- ➤ Volunteers helped pack more than 200,000 meals at Dort Financial Center as part of United Way’s Day of Service event. Over 100 community members (including young children) joined to assist those in need. Mid-Michigan Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Monday at Flint Cultural Center Academy, a fashion show featured handmade, upcycled designs by Black youth and a mother-daughter founded brand to spotlight creativity, sustainability and youth entrepreneurship. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Flint Public Library hosted the 41st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Celebration Saturday, Jan. 17, under the theme (Mission Possible 2: Building community, uniting a nation) that honored his legacy with a hymn performance and speeches urging community unity. Locals were encouraged to volunteer and work together. MLive
- ➤ Flint & Genesee Group launched a new video series that shows local history and stories. The videos are available online today + give viewers new ways to explore community life. ABC 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, Jan. 19, U of M — Flint students made no-sew blankets for local homeless residents during MLK Day of Service while staff joined the effort, and the university hosted a blood drive to support the community during winter. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ The Grand Blanc Township Police Department unveiled a Wall of Honor on Monday, Jan. 19 — a lasting tribute to recognize law enforcement service in the community, reflecting local pride and commitment to history. Mid-Michigan Now
