COMMUNITY NEWS

  • New Paths Inc. hosted a recovery-friendly Sober Bowl tailgate on Feb. 8 at its Flint Township campus (3139 Hogarth Ave), offering free pizza, live music and a safe game day space for local supporters of sobriety. Additional community sponsors helped enhance this unique celebration.  MLive
  • A Flint non-profit is hosting a Galentine's Day brunch this Saturday to celebrate friendship as community members gather for a festive event.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gardner White Furniture will reopen the former Art Van and Value City store on Miller + Linden roads in Flint Township later this spring as a 56,500 sqft location expanding its Michigan footprint.  ABC 12
  • A new Panda Express will open next month in Davison Township at 1044 South State Road. The fast-casual chain will employ nearly 40 people and offer a drive-through (designed for local convenience).  MLive
  • Gardner White announced its expansion and plans to open a new store at 4577 Miller Road in Flint Township as Value City Furniture winds down its sales. The Midwest chain will add nine new locations+ bringing its signature style and same-day delivery to more families.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Rocky's Great Outdoors (55 years in business) held its final liquidation sale over the weekend in Burton before permanently closing its doors. Owners thanked the community for their long-time support.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the New McCree Theatre on Clio Road, 'The Motown Story' has run since Feb. 6 and will continue through Feb. 28. The musical traces Motown Records’ rise from Detroit to LA — highlighting key artists and a cultural journey central to the community.  Flint Beat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Flint Registry received $5 million from the federal HHS budget — a move that stops delays in water crisis settlement payments. The registry, open to those affected from April 2014 until October 2015, will help track lead exposure impact in Flint.  MLive
  • Genesee County commissioners authorized a fundraiser to benefit the Animal Control shelter with a golf outing, dinner, and silent auction later this year at the Pasadena Avenue facility. The effort aims to boost funding amid rising operating costs beyond the small millage and donations.  MLive
  • A Flint police officer died on Monday, Feb. 9, and official details remain pending as Mayor Sheldon Neeley urged the community to support the officer’s family.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, a Flint doctor and AMA president for six months, joined a White House press conference to discuss revised Dietary Guidelines that stress diet and nutrition over treatment— he said investing in prevention is key to shifting the focus of national health care.  ABC 12
