COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ashley M. Burns, director of property management at Communities First, Inc., has been named to the National Apartment Association's Diversity Leadership Program which selects 15 rental housing professionals. The yearlong program will provide mentorship and training to help her advance equity in local housing.  Mid-Michigan Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 8 at 9:10 p.m. a residential fire on West Newell Street led Flint firefighters and state troopers to rescue three residents — including children and a disabled woman — with a 60-year-old taken to a local hospital for treatment.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Panda Express will open a new Genesee County location in Davison Township at 1044 South State Road early March, creating nearly 40 new jobs for the community.  MLive
  • Flint native Ahmad Alzahabi opened his dream restaurant, Golden Boy’s, at Flint Farmers' Market and celebrated a grand opening on Saturday—he serves his signature Golden Bowl with marinated chicken and will add service on Tuesdays and Thursdays in March.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Back to the Bricks hosted VIP guests at Chrome & Ice at the Dort Financial Event Center on Thursday, Feb. 12, showcasing classic cars ahead of a series of upcoming events. The event offered an early look at plans to bring more automotive and cultural programs to Flint.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer signed a law that bans smartphones from public school classrooms starting this fall, following a pledge to reduce distractions (school districts must post their cellphone policies online to guide enforcement during instruction).  Flint Beat
  • The Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan visited the Mid-Michigan NOW studio on Feb. 12 to discuss how cookie sales help girls learn business skills (including goal setting, money management, and decision making) for future success.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Genesee County will host a career fair at Mott Community College Event Center on Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Job seekers can connect with county government hiring representatives for positions in various departments.  Flint Beat

  • Two historic buildings in Genesee County are set for renovation with state financial assistance. A century-old Flint house at 703 S. Grand Traverse St. will be turned into the Sit Down Taproom & Purveyor honoring union history and a downtown Montrose building will house five apartments and small commercial space.  ABC 12
