EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Swartz Creek Community Schools will hold virtual interviews for six superintendent candidates at 5 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 19, with public viewing at 8354 Cappy Lane, and will follow with a meet and greet plus community forum on Feb. 24 and final interviews on Feb. 25. MLive
- ➤ At Davison High School (1250 N. Oak Road), officials completed a $1.5M upgrade to a fire alarm and suppression system that now uses clear voice instructions during emergencies. The project was done after a failed inspection and passed a fire and building inspection on Dec. 29. MLive
- ➤ The Michigan Secretary of State's Office suspended On the Move Driving School Friday at 4050 W. Pierson Road in Mt. Morris Township — the school is barred from in-class and on-road instruction amid allegations of using uncertified instructors and faulty recordkeeping while further investigation continues. ABC 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Whitmer’s proposed 2027 budget omits the $5 million annual funding used to support Flint water crisis school programs for Genesee County students affected by lead exposure. Education officials say the removal of this support creates a gap and they hope the governor will address the need. ABC 12
- ➤ Genesee County officials postponed a decision to hire a construction manager for the recycling center at the former McDonald Dairy on Chavez Drive on Feb. 11 because cost estimates have reached $10 million (with risks of further increases). The board will reassess funding and project details before moving forward. MLive
- ➤ Flint residents who received property claim payments from the water crisis settlement are getting federal 1099 forms in the mail, causing confusion over tax liability — the City said the forms come from the payment administrator and tax experts recommend checking for possible interest accrual. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The city is partnering with local organizations to add Narcan kiosks at five Flint sites. Mayor Neeley announced the plan at Guiding Light Church yesterday — kits will be installed at the Mays Center, McKinley Center, Clio Road Service Center, and City Hall. MLive
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A historic building at 703 S. Grand Traverse St. will become the Sit Down Taproom and Purveyor, a restaurant themed on Flint’s 1936-37 Sit-Down Strike. The project will use a $250K grant and local tax abatement, with a total capital investment of $834,500 — part of Gov. Whitmer’s revitalization plan. Flint Beat

- ➤ Lake Fenton sophomore Alex Ostrander broke two program records at the MISCA Meet on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Venema Aquatic Center and earned Flint-area Athlete of the Week honors with 1,733 votes; he is the season's first swimmer to receive the honor. MLive
- ➤ Flint-area girls basketball rankings were updated after Goodrich clinched the division title with an 18-0 record while Owosso earned entry in the top 10 with a four-game win streak & other teams saw changes; updated rankings will be issued every Thursday. MLive
- ➤ The Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame named its Class of 2026 on Feb. 10 at the Flint Public Library, with inductees from Flint Northern including ex-NBA player Desmon Farmer and three teams from 1995. Its 40th ceremony will be on March 22 at Genesys Conference & Banquet Center. MLive
