COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mott Foundation has committed up to $20 million to upgrade parks and playgrounds at five local elementary schools, investing more than $7 million in select sites while students, staff and residents provide input as renovations finish by the end of summer.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A Flint real estate group raised funds for Whaley Children's Center on Feb. 18 through an online fundraiser & local contributions. Supporters can still help by getting involved in the campaign.  ABC 12
  • The Flint community mourns civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who died early Tuesday at 84 after making many visits that strengthened local bonds. Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley recalled Jackson’s commitment to community events (including local high school basketball games) as an enduring legacy.  ABC 12
  • Genesee County Animal Control is hosting an emergency pop-up adoption event at its shelter (4351 W. Pasadena Ave. in Flint Township) on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help relieve crowding after police recovered neglected animals earlier this week.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities removed 61 dogs and 3 cats from a Flint Township home on Elms Road Tuesday after a complaint revealed hazardous living conditions; officials found 26 dogs and 1 cat deceased. The surviving animals are at Genesee County Animal Shelter and will join an emergency adoption event Saturday.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gloria Coles Flint Public Library is hosting author Heather Buchanan for a reading and discussion of her novel 'Victors: A Novel of Love, War and Jazz' from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 1026 E. Kearsley St. — the event is free and part of Black History Month programming.  Flint Beat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bendle Middle School experienced a wall collapse in the wrestling room on Monday evening due to heavy weather; students attend classes in safe, alternate locations. Officials said demolition of the collapsed area may begin within the next few days (pending regulator approval) without affecting current classes.  ABC 12
  • Mott Community College Board moved discussion on allegations that President Shaunda Richardson Snell tried to sway religious views to Monday, Feb. 23 meeting. Faculty raised concerns over her remarks + a review was prompted by a letter from Americans United for Separation of Church and State.  Mid-Michigan Now
