COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The second annual M2Dsports Flintustry Boss Stars Basketball Showcase will take place on Saturday, Mar. 21 at New Standard Academy; local organizer Cris Da Boss stated that doors open (1 p.m.) and games begin (2 p.m.) with basketball tournaments and live music to unite families.  Flint Beat
  • Communities First, Inc. will host Community Candor, a panel on local philanthropy, at GM's Factory One (303 W. Water St.) in Flint on Friday, March 6 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Panelists Dan Kildee, Sue Peters, and Heidi Magyar will address community funding while offering breakfast and $25 registration.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Panda Express in Davison Township will have its grand opening on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:30 a.m. at 1044 S. State Road—first 88 customers in line get free T-shirts and prizes as the team readies for service after a Feb. 21 soft opening.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Flint Children's Museum hosts a free day for families Sunday, March 1 from 12pm to 5pm (sponsored by Genesee Intermediate School District). The museum offers over 40 hands-on exhibits and rotating activities that invite learning and discovery.  Mid-Michigan Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mortgage rates dropped below 6% as the average 30-year fixed rate fell to 5.98% last Thursday, boosting buying power for potential homebuyers in our community. Experts say the lower rate may ease inventory challenges & encourage moves in Flint.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools will host its annual A Taste of Literacy event on Wednesday, March 4 at Flint Farmers' Market from 4 to 7 p.m.—a free, family-friendly celebration featuring live magic, interactive storytelling, literacy games, raffles, free books, and Market Bucks for early attendees.  Flint Beat
  • Three local high school students discussed community advocacy and future plans during a Black History Month panel discussion and highlighted challenges and hope for change in the community, according to Mid-Michigan NOW.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Mott Community College’s board approved a statement after complaints that President Shaunda Richardson-Snell was trying to convert visitors. The board investigated the matter and vowed to keep religious freedom + inclusion on campus.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan's Treasury Department says refunds may take four to six weeks as it handles 1.6 million tax returns filed since Jan. 26 (complex filings delay processing further). Taxpayers are advised to review returns carefully and follow any identity verification instructions received.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Before today, the MTA held an open forum with community partners to review its Rides to Wellness program, which helped nearly 800 dialysis patients (and veterans and senior citizens) get door-to-door rides to medical appointments in Genesee County.  Mid-Michigan Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Flint vacated a section of Baker Street near the old Buick City site so Ashley Capital can begin work on a second building at Commerce Center — the company awaits a permit and plans spring construction on a development that may later offer 3.5 million sqft of space.  MLive
