COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Flint Islamic Center hosted a Ramadan dinner Sunday evening to honor retiring Clayton Township Police Chief Charlotte Brown as she prepares for her retirement next weekend. Guests celebrated her 35 years of service, sharing an iftar meal * a tribute to her leadership.  ABC 12
  • Construction crews are nearly finished with a $42 million expansion that will add nearly 57,000 sqft to the historic Berston Field House for new basketball courts, an elevated track + seating for up to 1,200 people. A grand opening for the new BB Nolden Center is planned later this year.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • B-Dogs in Davison will close its restaurant storefront on March 13 and continue serving popular hot dogs from a mobile cart and catering service, with owner Tim Bishop adding new menu items and planning pop-up events.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The X is a hidden-gem speakeasy tucked behind a bookshelf at On the Bricks downtown that revives prohibition-era cocktails with classic 1920s recipes. Manager Brian Barnett said themed evenings and bartending classes will be offered soon at the venue (555 Saginaw St.).  Flint Beat

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Weekend attacks on the Strait of Hormuz raised oil prices more than 7%, causing local gas stations to charge about $3.39 per gallon, and experts see no immediate further hikes which could affect Flint drivers through ongoing market forces.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Gas prices in Michigan rose by 14 cents compared to last week, with Monday’s data showing regular unleaded averaging $2.99 per gallon & a 15-gallon fill costing about $44, while some metro areas saw prices above $3. This rise may affect drivers in and around Flint.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Brian Nolan (retired pediatrician) was appointed to the Grand Blanc Board of Education on Tuesday, Feb. 24 to fill Meredith Anderson’s vacant seat and will attend his first meeting on March 16; he was selected from three candidates to serve until the November election.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State tax officials said refunds may take four to six weeks after a return is accepted due to over 1.6 million filings since Jan. 26. Taxpayers with complex returns may face delays, and the filing deadline is April 15.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Michigan State University’s Rx Kids program from Flint expands to all 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula to support pregnant families and those with babies born on or after March 1 (eligibility applies). Eligible families can receive $1,500 prenatally and $500 monthly for the baby's first six months by applying online.  Mid-Michigan Now
