CRIME NEWS

  • A 25-year-old man was fatally stabbed at a McDonald's on the 1800 block of South Dort Highway Friday night around 5:40 p.m.—police said he was involved in an altercation with a 53-year-old man who was treated then arrested.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local venues in Flint and nearby areas will host St. Patrick's Day events on March 16 and 17 with traditional Irish food, drinks, and live music. Options include green beer, corned beef and cabbage specials and a unique Lucky Charms matcha at a local coffeehouse.  MLive
  • At the Flint Islamic Center, families and volunteers set out dates, water, and food for breaking their fast after Maghrib prayer during Ramadan. The center (built in 1987) in Clayton Township (10 miles west) has grown with a rising local Muslim community that includes doctors and store owners who help at the mosque.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Renae Voight, a sixth‑grade teacher at Linden Charter Academy, won the Golden Apple Award during an assembly in Flint—she was nominated by a fellow educator for making her classroom a safe space for students. Her dedication has been praised by her family and colleagues who see her work as more than just a job.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A groundbreaking ceremony on March 14 at 2101 Lewis St. marked the start of building a $4 million bilingual early education center on Flint’s east side that will teach in English and Spanish. The new two-story center (serving 65 young students) is expected to open in about one year (with state and city grants funding the project).  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint will hire 100 teenagers this summer for the Safe & Clean Initiative as announced by Mayor Sheldon Neeley—promising a six-week program for ages 15 to 18 that offers job skills, peer mediation training and community engagement activities once approved by City Council.  ABC 12
  • The first settlement checks from the $626 million Flint water settlement fund will be mailed in the next couple weeks to families of 12 victims who died from Legionnaires’ disease linked to the water crisis. Most other payments are set for late summer or early fall as claim verifications continue — some claimants may face further delays.  ABC 12
