- ➤ The City of Flint announced in a press conference today that it will demolish the old Oak Park Methodist Episcopal Church this summer as part of its Safe & Clean Summer Initiative—funded by a Community Development Block Grant. City officials said the building has long been an eyesore and a symbol of disinvestment. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Two Men and a Truck and Grand Blanc Police are teaming up to collect basic needs items for moms at the YWCA Safehouse until May 1. Donation boxes are set up in the police department's lobby — stocked with hygiene products, hair care, and detergents — to assist local mothers. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said on April 1 in downtown Flint that Sgt. Blake Hiben was justified in shooting a man who fled from police—he fired at the officer—and Chief Matthew Bade said the man had tried to murder an officer. MLive
- ➤ Ann Turnbow, 18, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and operating on a suspended license after a July 9, 2023 drunk driving crash on Flint’s north side that killed 29-year-old Jalon Tarver — she now faces a prison sentence of 43 to 86 months when she appears in court on May 12. ABC 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Education Department is taking back $15.6 million in unspent COVID-19 funds from Flint Community Schools, marking the largest funding loss for any Michigan district. School projects such as HVAC systems and windows were preapproved for reimbursement but officials now face uncertainty over receiving the money & must address new criteria if seeking a second approval. - ➤ Flint Community Schools has leased the closed Pierce Elementary School at 1101 W. Vernon Drive to two local groups. Flint Soap Box Derby will run STEM workshops and a summer race while El Ballet Folklórico Estudiantil will offer cultural arts classes for children. MLive

- ➤ McLaren Flint announced that it is using a new Volpara Risk Pathways software to improve risk assessment for breast and other common cancers. The software lets patients enter their histories and enables clinicians to run data through risk models — helping them decide on follow-up care — to guide early detection and care plans.
