COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mid-Michigan NOW employees volunteered at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in Flint yesterday (April 8) as part of Sinclair’s Day of Service, packing 257 boxes with canned goods, rice, and powdered milk to help families in need. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire in a vacant building on the 800 block of Martin Luther King Avenue killed three people believed to be homeless on Tuesday, April 7, and investigators are reviewing the scene while local charities extend shelter services amid cold weather (victim identities have not been released).  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Flint Township is set to review a new Speedway gas station proposal today at 5 p.m. at the township offices; the project, planned for the former Pizza Hut site, will include six pumps, parking and a 4,748 sqft convenience store (per Economic Enhancement Director Tracey Tucker).  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artist DJ Smuvi has teamed with the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library to host a silent disco every Wednesday through April—that lets residents dance while exploring books from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Mid-Michigan Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Genesee County earned over $2.5 million in tourism spending in the first quarter of 2026 by hosting 23 events through Explore Flint & Genesee. Winter sports tournaments and U.S. Open Cup soccer matches boosted local business, and more events are planned for later this year.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A failed cross culvert created a sinkhole on Webster Rd (between Stanley Rd and Mt. Morris Rd) that led to the road being closed on April 6. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • On Tuesday, April 7, the NLRB dismissed a complaint filed by striking nurses at Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township. The union said it will appeal the ruling—citing disputes over seniority and return-to-work protections as contract talks continue.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • State leaders met in Flint on Wed, April 8 to discuss the potential impact of Medicaid cuts, rising health care costs, and reduced access to routine care. Congresswoman Kristen McDonald-Rivet and experts stressed the need to protect affordable services & improve care for vulnerable residents.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Memorial Healthcare opened its new medical center in Flushing today in a ribbon cutting that converted a former Rite Aid building into a state-of-the-art facility offering family medicine, urgent care, specialty services, lab, pharmacy and radiology support. Local officials and hospital leaders praised the expanded access to care for mid-Michigan patients.  ABC 12
  • Memorial Healthcare opened its newest medical center yesterday at a longtime vacant Rite Aid store on West Main Street in Flushing, offering family medicine, urgent care, rotating specialty services, laboratory and radiology care, and dispensing prescriptions, bandages — filling an important local need.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • The Flint Firebirds hosted their annual paint the ice event at Dort Financial Center on Apr. 8 — drawing local fans to admire unique ice designs and team spirit. The event offered a creative twist from the hockey team and brought the community together.  ABC 12
  • The Pistons won 137-111 in their home finale against the Bucks on Wednesday, Apr. 8, with Cade Cunningham (returning after a collapsed lung) and Isaiah Stewart coming back from injury. The team shot 57% and will finish the season on the road against the Hornets and Pacers.  MLive
  • A list featuring 10 standout high school softball players was released ahead of the season, spotlighting breakout talent from Goodrich, Fenton & Grand Blanc as teams prepare for competitive local contests this year.  MLive
