- ➤ Sinclair's annual Day of Service was held Wednesday as community members and Mid-Michigan NOW helped the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan sort donated food, bag squash, and repack meat and frozen foods. In 2024, the team bagged 1,200 pounds of squash, sorted 8,637 pounds of food, and helped about 28,000 local people facing food insecurity in Genesee County. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ The University of Michigan-Flint is hosting its annual Take Back the Night rally as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month to promote a safe campus environment and support survivors. - ➤ Beats X BBQ returns this Memorial Day weekend in Flint with music, food trucks and vendors for all ages. The event will use the parking lot at Tenacity Brewing at 119 N. - ➤ Residents in Flint will join the Be a Tourist in Your Hometown event on May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to explore cultural and historical sites using a passport and wristband — examples include the Children's Museum, Whaley Historic House Museum, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church — while free bus rides from Brush Park and special local restaurant offers add extra benefits. - ➤ A 37-year-old Flint man was convicted on April 8 of multiple felonies—kidnapping, first degree criminal sexual conduct, second degree criminal sexual conduct, criminal sexual conduct with intent of sexual penetration, accosting a child for immoral purposes and aggravated indecent exposure—for sexually assaulting a child in 2022. - ➤ Councilwoman Tonya Burns asked during the April 7 hearing how the city will cover new staffing costs at the renamed Mays Senior and Community Service Center, noting that expenses rose after the nonprofit left + the city now faces new financial obligations. Officials said they will follow up on funding questions + county representatives had earlier labeled the city's millage application incomplete. MLive
- ➤ Flint city officials proposed a $2.8M investment from American Rescue funds to replace over 3,000 outdated streetlight bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs to cut monthly utility costs from $88,000 to $41,000—A council committee met on April 9 to review a contract with Consumers Energy, and the full council is expected to give final approval next week so the city can use the savings to add at least 300 new streetlights this year.
