COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bethel United Methodist Church will host an Easter food giveaway on Good Friday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at 1309 N. Ballenger Highway in Flint—families can receive groceries to prepare a full meal while supplies last with no registration required.  Flint Beat

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A driver was badly hurt in a crash under the Flint railroad overpass on South Saginaw Street near 13th Street on Wednesday night — rescuers freed the driver from a pickup truck — and the driver was taken to a hospital as Flint Police began an investigation.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • On Christmas Eve, Malik Letroy Webb — a 30-year-old Flint man — was accused of firing on a car during a carjack attempt on Ray Road in Oxford when he shot a vehicle carrying Dr. Barbara Wolf and her daughter while prosecutors added a Super Habitual Offender enhancement that could require a minimum 25-year sentence if convicted.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Bunzl Distribution and Victory Packaging fully occupied the first building at the Flint Commerce Center, creating over 100 jobs as part of a $300 million redevelopment on the former Buick City site. Ashley Capital said more development will follow in the coming years — officials expect it to boost Flint's economy further — as additional buildings are planned.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint City Council did not move a proposal to create a $2 million water stabilization fund on April 9—some members wanted more details on how rising water bills from a 5.9% rate increase by the Great Lakes Water Authority would be covered. Mayor Neeley said the fund is needed to avoid future rate hikes while council members remain cautious over spending details.  MLive
  • Flushing Township is planning its first kayak launch at the Nature Park using a $207,200 DNR trust fund grant, and township board members voted on March 11 to submit design plans for state review—if approved, the project will cost $278,400 with the township covering 20%—while final designs are expected between May and June and construction will start in the fall.  MLive

  • Cooper Boike of Genesee Christian averaged 23 points per game after returning from eye surgery and led his team to a district championship. Local readers voted him as the top pick on the Flint-area Dream Team reader poll for boys basketball—highlighting his strong comeback.  MLive
  • Goodrich sophomore Baylor Lauinger received top votes to be named Player of the Year in MLive's Dream Team poll for girls hoops, as readers chose her for her strong play during the season + Genesee Christian's Haven Chapman and Goodrich's Kayla Hairston also ranked in the top three.  MLive
