  • Flint reached a milestone in its fight against urban blight after demolishing its 1,000th vacant house—located at 610 W Newall Street on the north side. The Genesee County Land Bank used federal and state funds to fund the project—residents say it makes the area safer and cleaner.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Friends of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library will host a spring used book sale to raise funds for expanding library services and programs. Attendees will find children's books offered with a buy one get free deal, all other books priced at $1, CDs, DVDs, and two shelves of special rare books — and they can also join the Friends to support the library.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Chicken Shack opened its first Genesee County restaurant in Grand Blanc at 11355 S. Saginaw Road and will host a grand opening celebration on April 29 at 11 a.m. The new restaurant will offer a Buy One Get One Free deal on chicken dinners, hourly $20 gift cards, and a party pack giveaway for the 100th customer as it expands its 24-location chain in Michigan.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flint cultural institutions faced setbacks when the federal government revoked $150,000 in NEH funding for the Flint Institute of Arts' project to replace its aging humidifiers—forcing the museum to shift its Spring Appeal. Local library programs like Great Michigan Reads were also affected—officials urged residents to contact their representatives.  Flint Beat
