COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rev. Robert Sherman McCathern, a Flint faith leader who preaches at Joy Tabernacle and runs the Urban Renaissance Center, was inducted into the 39th Martin Luther King, Jr. College of Ministers and Laity at Morehouse College for his work with justice-impacted youth and African American families. He will host the Ubuntu Rising event on April 24 to bring healing and more support to the community.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Big Lots will reopen five Michigan stores in May as part of a brand relaunch following its bankruptcy filing. Three stores will open on May 1—Burton, Flint and Shelby Township—and two will open on May 15 in Port Huron and Southgate.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Flint Township nursing home worker Dontia Arrington pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges for third-degree vulnerable adult abuse and aggravated assault of a 93-year-old resident at the former Landings of Genesee Valley, and she faces up to two years in prison with sentencing scheduled for July 11—family first noticed bruises in December.  ABC 12
  • A 19-year-old pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon without a permit in connection with a Beecher shootout last summer—his plea deal dropped charges of attempted murder and other firearm offenses and calls for at least 36 months probation with sentencing set for May 19.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, the Flint and Genesee Economic Alliance is collaborating with Lurvey Construction to prepare a 1,000-acre Advanced Manufacturing District in Mundy Township for a future advanced manufacturer. The project also supports the Youth Build program at Mott Community College by giving local young adults practical hands-on training in construction trades.  MLive
  • Phase one of Ashley Capital’s redevelopment of the former Buick City site was completed as Bunzl Distribution leased 162,637 square feet, bringing the 330,000 square foot building to full occupancy—officials plan future developments for a state-of-the-art industrial park to boost Flint's economic opportunity.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Longtime educator Craig Douglas stressed that addressing bullying is crucial for making classrooms safe. He urged school officials to adopt stronger anti‐bullying measures (drawing on his experience in Flint schools) to help all students feel secure (he spoke on April 15th).  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Flint residents have waited for settlement checks from a $626 million water crisis settlement—tens of thousands of claims remain pending—after submitting all paperwork by June 2022, three years after final approval. Mayor Sheldon Neeley urged the court-appointed administrator to speed up the review process—he said the delay has affected many families—while frustration grows among residents.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Freshman Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet marked her first 100 days in office on Sunday—succeeding former Congressman Dan Kildee in Michigan's 8th District—and has returned over $4.5 million to families and seniors by assisting with IRS, Social Security, and VA issues—while planning new bills to lower costs on items like prescription drugs and eggs.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Genesee County Health Department will hold community listening sessions on April 29, April 30, May 2, May 6, May 7 and May 8 to gather feedback for a new strategic plan to improve local health services (sessions run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with food and networking beginning at 5:30). Residents 18 and older will be assigned a session based on their address and receive a $50 gift card along with refreshments.  Flint Beat
