- ➤ The Clean & Green program, led by the Genesee County Land Bank Authority, will begin its 21st season on April 25 at the Flint Public Library when community members can pick up supplies and join over 60 groups to maintain 3,400 vacant lots every three weeks & earn stipends as they work together from April to September. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Timothy John Kildee, the 28-year-old nephew of former U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, terminated his counsel during his preliminary examination on April 22 and said he would either request a publicly-appointed defender or represent himself as he faces charges including felony murder for allegedly shooting and killing his father—his decision has delayed further proceedings. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Participants in the IGNITE program marked Education and Sharing Day at Genesee County Jail on April 17 when Sheriff Chris Swanson read a proclamation to representatives from Chabad of Eastern Michigan — the program gives inmates a second chance to learn and aims to reduce recidivism. MLive
- ➤ The University of Michigan-Flint closed its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and launched a new Wolverine Hub of Opportunity, Persistence and Excellence to support student retention and graduation. Student services such as advising, career guidance and cultural programming will now be handled by other departments—diversity statements in hiring and admissions have been discontinued. MLive

- ➤ On April 21, Flint's City Council approved a $2-million transfer from federal stimulus funds to keep water rates unchanged and avoid an extra $5—7 per month charge for customers. Officials say the move is a temporary fix as Mayor Neeley's administration works on a long-term plan and steps up bill collections. MLive
- ➤ The rebuilding of Linden Road in Mt. Morris Township will close most traffic today until late June, allowing access only to residents and local businesses. A detour from Pierson + Jennings + Carpenter roads is in effect and drivers are advised to allow extra time. MLive
