Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of April.
Good morning, Flint.
On April 28, two Mott Community College trustees—John Daly and Art Reyes—called for Trustee Sue Couch to resign after she missed meetings and deleted prior social media posts.
They argued that her absence has distracted the board from addressing key college governance issues.
The Flint City Council honored three residents on Monday for pulling two women from a burning car after a crash on Pierson Road near Longfellow Avenue two weeks ago—the heroes Christopher Smith, LaAngel Hunter and Jaylin Washington acted quickly, and the injured victims are now recovering in the hospital.
Activist Jedediah Brown said he was removed from a Flint City Council meeting on April 8 by Flint Police Chief Terence Green and Officer Vincent Villareal after asking for more time to speak—he filed a federal complaint on April 29 alleging his rights were violated while supporting candidate Beverly Biggs-Leavy for a Third Ward seat.
Flint City Council did not pass funding Monday for Mayor Neeley’s Safe & Clean Summer Youth Initiative for the fourth time, halting plans for a six-week program for 100 teens that includes jobs, peer mediation training + community engagement to reduce youth violence.
Neeley said he is seeking $225,000 and will accept applications if the council approves funding.
Serenity House opened its new Flint center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony—it gives free recovery help with support groups, yoga, meditation, and natural healing for those facing drug problems, relationship issues, and trauma.
Founder Tara Moreno Wallen, who is in long-term recovery, said the center is free because it is fully funded by grants.
Linden’s ace Kayla Widner pitched 16 innings in a doubleheader against Fenton on Monday night at Linden High School — she struck out 26 batters and allowed only two runs in one game and four hits in the other.
Her strong showing helped Linden improve to a 10-0 league record and take control of the FML Stripes title race.
Corunna high school senior Sierra Smith, a first-team all-Flint Metro League selection, won the Flint-area Senior Spring Sports Star poll with 9,689 votes.
She won her first tournament at the Charlotte Quad on April 26 and will try to qualify for states this season — her farm life and hard work on the court show her blue-collar spirit.
