COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Flint’s NourisHER+HIM Youth and Family Culinary Arts Summer series will run this summer with classes held at the Flint Farmers' Market. The program will give families hands-on learning in cooking and nutrition.  ABC 12
  • Flint’s vacant lots are set to become greener — the non-structural blight committee planted the first of more than 1,500 trees Tuesday in the neighborhood of the late Quincy Murphy. Additional tree planting events will take place until May 2 to further enhance local green spaces.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Marquon Jackson, a 25-year-old Flint man charged with a fatal shooting on March 15 at a Sunoco gas station on North Ballenger Highway and Flushing Road, was found not guilty in his second trial on April 28—he will be released from Genesee County Jail.  MLive
  • Mariah Henderson, 18, was fatally shot while driving on Clio Road near Myrtle Avenue on October 6 and her grandmother, Alma Henderson, pleads for anyone with information to come forward as the family seeks justice.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Willie Ray Cummings Jr., 29, was convicted of eight felonies after resisting arrest and assaulting a deputy during a traffic stop last summer—he was charged for riding an unregistered mini-bike and carrying a loaded ghost gun near Fenton and Hemphill roads and will be sentenced on May 19.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Latinx Technology & Community Center will host the premier Cinco de Mayo celebration at Brush Park from noon to 8 p.m. on May 3—featuring authentic Mexican food, a mariachi band, live music, and vendors with free entry and food and drinks for purchase.  MLive
  • The Mott, Motown & More Celebrity Lip Sync Show returns for its 18th year at the FIM Capitol Theatre downtown Flint with a program titled The Legacy of Legends featuring local figures such as Dr. Sunita Tummala and costume designer Pat Hill— the event also offers a pre-show dinner at MCC Culinary Arts Institute at 5:30 p.m. and a post-show after-party with the cast and crew.  Flint Beat

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Genesee County Lottery club won a $2 million prize when a member bought a scratch-off ticket during a trip to the Upper Peninsula. The club chose a one-time lump sum payment of about $1.3 million and will use the money to pay bills, take a trip to Florida, and live debt free—marking a rare win.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Five Michigan State Police troopers sued the department over a rigged promotion process at the Flint post, alleging leaders pre-selected candidates by giving some questions in advance— they filed the lawsuit on April 23 in the Michigan Court of Claims and are seeking promotion pay and retirement benefits for work done from 2019 to 2023.  MLive
