COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Applewood Estate at 1400 E. Kearsley St welcomes visitors free from May 1 to Oct. 31 with blooming gardens, self-guided house tours and guided garden tours on select Thursdays in Flint (taste apple jelly from the heirloom orchard).  MLive
  • AmeriCorps volunteers and local partners will revitalize Kearsley Park in Flint on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., planting 3,000 flowers & clearing invasive species to honor philanthropist Russ Mawby’s legacy.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sweetwater Tavern closed its downtown Flint location at 500 Saginaw St after less than two years of operation. Uptown Reinvestment Corporation said the space is being refreshed for new tenants to enrich the area.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Donnie Cox marks 50 years on-air by recreating his first interview with Jim Glasglow during a special broadcast today at 9 a.m. on WTRX, a milestone that highlights his longstanding career in Flint.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint’s LatinX Technology and Community Center is hosting a free Cinco de Mayo fiesta downtown today from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Buckham Alley, featuring live music by Los G Notes, folkloric dancers Culturas de Sol, Latin American street food vendors, and festive activities (mechanical bull rides, youth arts and crafts, and a VIP Lounge).  MLive
  • Residents attended a Cinco de Mayo festival at the Flint Farmers’ Market featuring food, a mariachi band and dance performances to kick off Tuesday’s celebration — the event also reunited Washington Elementary School alumni to honor Latin heritage.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MTA Flint unveiled its new MTA Trip Planner app — which lets riders check bus times and will add a ride-scheduling feature within the next month. The service also introduced a pilot trolley loop in Davison connecting Meijer, downtown, and Kroger.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flint’s Hurley Medical Center got a new transport incubator for its NICU last week, paid for by nearly $69,700 raised from the ELGA Credit Union Foundation’s (Raise the Purse) fundraiser. Nurses will begin training next week to improve newborn transport safety.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan high school football returns to Michigan Stadium with the 'Battle at the Big House' series from Aug. 27—29 featuring three Flint-area teams. The schedule includes a game on Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. when Goodrich meets Frankenmuth at Goodrich High School — renewing a long-standing rivalry.  MLive
  • Michigan basketball player Trey McKenney (a Flint native) threw the ceremonial first pitch Friday night at Comerica Park ahead of the Tigers' three-game series with Texas. McKenney, who helped the Wolverines win the national championship, threw a fly pitch to starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.  MLive
  • Fenton remains undefeated in the Flint Metro League Stripes Division and will face Davison today ahead of district play beginning May 29. Teams like Montrose, Holly, and Goodrich are shifting power rankings & setting the stage for a competitive season.  MLive
