COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Genisys Credit Union earned the Philanthropic Leadership Award from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan for its $30,000 donation and 560 volunteer hours — efforts that helped provide over 437K meals to local families in 2025.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Soggy Bottom Bar in Flint closed indefinitely after owner Steven Tessmer died Wednesday at age 68 — the closure was announced on Facebook Thursday.  MLive
  • Cafe Brulee, a new local coffee shop and bakery, is open in Swartz Creek and offers locally brewed coffee, espresso drinks, and scratch-made treats. The shop plans to host community events (crafting classes and bingo nights) soon.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sesame Street Live! will come soon to Dort Financial Center, offering an interactive show for local families. Ticket and showtime information is available online.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bentley Community Schools are facing a rising vaping issue now affecting even elementary students. Administrators have enforced a 25-hour community service rule for students caught with vapes and are asking parents to help curb the habit on campus.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The proposed Agriculture Appropriations Bill for fiscal 2027 would cut $200 million from WIC, reducing monthly fruits and vegetables benefits to as low as $10 for local families + Genesee County Health Department officials say the proposal is still under debate in Congress.  ABC 12
  • Work will resume on a shared-use path in Grand Blanc Township Monday, May 11, causing lane closures on Embury Road (southbound) and Cook Road (eastbound) where two-way traffic will be maintained; flaggers will manage flows as drivers are advised to use alternate routes until the project ends in late July.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new multiple sclerosis support group was announced on May 7 and meets at the Mays Senior & Community Center to offer local residents a chance to share support. Additional meeting details are expected to be released soon.  ABC 12
  • New Paths Inc is hosting a free Women’s Wellness Expo with nearly 40 vendors and a grocery giveaway at its Flint Township campus on May 20 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.—the event will connect women of all ages with local health and wellness resources.  MLive
  • MSU's Spartan Bus Tour visited Flint to host a public health fair that featured a giant walk-through colon—reminding residents to get screened for colorectal cancer.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Hamady High School will host the 'Dreamz Two Reality' All-American game on Saturday, May 9 at 3:30 p.m. Local athletes will showcase their skills + community members can enjoy the spirited event.  ABC 12
