- ➤ ALDI opened its new store at 7480 E. Court St. in Davison Township on May 8 at 8:45 a.m.—the grand opening gave free gift bags to the first 100 customers and allowed shoppers to enter a sweepstakes for a $500 gift card. The store offers fresh produce, quality meats, and an exclusive selection of brands as part of ALDI’s plan to add 800 new stores nationwide. MLive

- ➤ Today at 6 p.m., the Capitol Theatre at 140 E. 2nd St. will show the iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as part of the Flint Institute of Music’s 2025 season. Community organizers Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, Manisha Kay and Rachana Setty arranged for Indian food and drinks to be available — offering a cultural taste of Indian traditions. MLive

- ➤ Mott Community College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedicated its new health sciences lab in honor of Mrs. Phyllis Kalanquin—a nurse with 35 years of experience whose family donated funds to help students simulate real patient care. Mid-Michigan Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday morning, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet announced that $11,969,176 in federal funds was granted to Flint’s Mass Transportation Authority to expand bus routes and upgrade facilities. Ed Benning said the grant will support better service for residents in Genesee County — helping more people reach work, school, or a doctor. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ The Michigan Economic Development Corp. awarded grants to five Mid-Michigan cities to improve parks and cultural institutions. Flint will receive $1 million to restore its riverfront — other projects include park and marketplace upgrades in Saginaw, Midland, Fenton, and Bay City. ABC 12
- ➤ State Rep. Cynthia Neeley said protesters who brought a casket to her home on Beogle Street threatened her family's safety—Texas activist Jedidiah Brown was charged with two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct following the protest. MLive
- ➤ Four AmeriCorps members at Genesee County Land Bank were informed last week that their volunteer positions were cut following federal grant reductions that affected over 32,000 nationwide. Michael Freeman said their work with the Conservation District—clearing vacant lots and planting trees—has been delayed and may impact future community improvements. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Nearly 600 Michigan offenders who were sentenced to life as young adults may receive new hearings after a Michigan Supreme Court ruling. Prosecutors in Genesee County and Wayne County have about six months to review the cases — officials say this will help ensure sentences match the offenders' ages. ABC 12
