  • Soggy Bottom Bar owner Steven Tessmer died May 6, prompting staff and family to pause and grieve before planning a future reopening. The popular Flint bar, known for its Jazz Night and smash burgers, is at 613 Martin Luther King Ave + community support is welcomed when it reopens.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools may receive $8.8M state funding to demolish four vacant school buildings. Rep. Cynthia Neeley filed a spending request on April 30 to shift funds from maintenance back to classrooms & demolition may be complete by 2027.  Flint Beat
  • Petitions for the Flint Board of Education are available at the Flint City Clerk's Office (1101 South Saginaw Street) for candidates running for one of three seats in the Nov. 3 election. They must submit 40 signatures or pay a $100 fee by 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.  ABC 12
  • Bendle Public Schools received a nearly $26,000 grant from the Good Food for Michigan Project to increase Michigan-grown food in cafeterias; the funding will create local farm partnerships + upgrade kitchen equipment for better student meals.  ABC 12
  • Judges selected 60 business ideas and social solutions from kids & teens across 22 states to advance in the Mott Million Dollar Challenge. Finalists will receive $5,000 each and work with mentors ahead of a live pitch event on June 15 and 16 in Flint.  ABC 12
  • On Thursday, the Gamma Delta Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa hosted its third annual Black Achievers Ceremony, honoring high school seniors nearing graduation and awarding scholarships (totaling up to $14,000) for their future studies.  ABC 12

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Yesterday, Communities First cut a ribbon for Orchard Manor and Orchard Grove Apartments on Flushing Road east of Ballenger Highway, marking a $25 million investment that added 74 mixed-income units + 10 for veterans. The project addresses Flint’s ongoing need for more affordable housing.  MLive

  • Crim Sports honored youth athletes at its End-of-Year Banquet and Greater Flint Olympian Games Kickoff on Friday night at the Dort Financial Center, celebrating season achievements and setting the stage for the upcoming games season & uniting teammates for what comes next.  ABC 12

  • Lake Fenton junior catcher Laureena Baehl broke school records in Thursday's doubleheader against Flint Kearsley with three hits and six RBIs, raising her season totals to 10 home runs and 16 doubles—coach Todd Wilkinson praised her disciplined play as a sign of more records to come.  MLive
