COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, a local partnership held a free community baby shower at St. Michael’s Conference Center in Flint to support new and expecting parents—families picked up diapers, wipes, bottles, and clothing. Healthcare professionals on site offered free advice on prenatal care and local support services.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • More than 30 local advocacy groups will attend the Genesee County Community Safety Resource Fair on May 17 at Berston Field House in Flint—providing free food, activities and local resources for those affected by crime. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and welcomes all ages.  MLive
  • After weeks of uncertainty, Flint’s free community toolshed reopened on May 5 after NEH received a $50,000 tax credit from the IRS. The funding will support operations through July 31 — NEH is still seeking an additional $75,000 to extend services through November.  Flint Beat
  • FISH of Grand Blanc runs the 'Feed the Bus' campaign—asking locals to donate funds so the organization can keep kids fed during the summer.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 9, nearly 550 Catholic students participated in a silent Eucharistic procession at Flint Powers Catholic High School led by Father Tony Smela—marking the first full-school public display of faith since moving into its current building—where consecrated bread was carried to five altars representing the school houses.  MLive
  • Mott Community College faces a lawsuit filed by its faculty union over a conflict of interest when Trustee Janet Couch's daughter acted as the real estate agent for Interim President Shaunda Richardson Snell’s November property purchase. A board meeting is set for Monday—where members will vote on removing Richardson Snell’s interim title and approving a permanent contract amid concerns about the college’s presidential search.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Genesee County will close two satellite courts (Flushing and Mt. Morris) by August 5 to cut costs after a 2023 resolution, with a settlement reached on a lawsuit against the closures. Flushing Mayor Ed Sullivan said older residents will face more travel challenges (having to go downtown for court services) as the county plans to build a new facility for all district court operations by 2030.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Genesee County commissioners have not yet decided on launching an independent review of complaints about the Road Commission—meeting with their attorneys next week to plan next steps. They face longstanding claims of discrimination and retaliation that have led to lawsuits over the years.  MLive
  • Genesee County approved a three-year sponsorship of $37,500 for the Randy Wise Junior Open at Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden on May 7, a move that will boost local tourism + support promising junior golfers.  MLive
  • Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson will host a Coffee with a Cop event at McDonald's in Flint on Tuesday, May 13 from 9:30 a.m. — 10:30 a.m. to answer community questions about safety and law enforcement.  ABC 12
