COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Madison Academy and New Standard Academy hosted a combined junior/senior prom at Flint Farmers Market on May 9. More than 50 students danced and walked the red carpet (under the Arabian Nights theme) while family and friends watched closely.  MLive
  • Yesterday, a new playground opened along Avenue B in Flint as Mayor Sheldon Neeley and community members gathered for music, local food truck fare, and a mural painting. The park is designed to boost health, creativity, and neighborhood revitalization.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • On May 10th, Genesee County residents gathered outside to enjoy the opening of the pavilion at the Flint Farmers’ Market where they sampled various food options + shopped for hand-crafted trinkets. The market remains open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 300 E. First St.  Mid-Michigan Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Deborah Murphy, the mother of the late Councilman Quincy Murphy, led a tree planting project in north Flint by coordinating volunteers who planted 1,600 native trees on 50 vacant lots between April 28 and May 2. The project, funded by $250,000 from the Consumers Energy Foundation and $15,000 from The Conservation Fund—local efforts that will be maintained by the Genesee Conservation District—aims to fight blight and improve safety in the Third Ward.  Flint Beat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flint doctor Bobby Mukkamala faced a 1% chance of survival after a fall cancer diagnosis and had surgery at the Mayo Clinic in January to remove a brain tumor, reaching a 90% recovery. He will become president of the American Medical Association on June 10—while his progress is checked every two months.  MLive
