CULTURE NEWS

  • Flint will host the free Roots Run Festival this weekend — a three-day celebration of wellness and music. Day one features indoor healing practices at The Hive, while day two and the final outdoor concert offer activities for families and kids.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint Elite held its joint prom for Madison Academy and New Standard Academy on Friday, May 8 at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront inside the GM Renaissance Center (a red carpet affair) where students arrived in style and were crowned prom royalty.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The CS Mott Foundation committed up to $100 million for a new high school on the former Flint Central campus off Crapo Street. Flint schools will begin phased demolition & abatement work with construction planned for 2027 and classes set to start in September 2028.  MLive
  • Over 100 Westwood Heights Hamady students celebrated their prom on Friday, May 8 at Genesys Banquet and Conference Center in Grand Blanc Township. They showcased stylish fashion at the 'An Evening in Hollywood' themed dance, where Calvin Attyberry was crowned king and Amara Stanley queen.  MLive
  • Candidates for Flint Board of Education may now pick up petitions at the City Clerk’s Office (1101 S. Saginaw St) in City Hall. They must collect 40 to 100 signatures or pay a $100 fee by 4 p.m. on July 21 for the November 3 election.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Michigan High School Athletic Association released a tournament schedule for 27 Flint-area softball teams. First-round play begins May 22 at local high schools, with teams in Divisions 1, 2, 3 & 4 competing through May 30 for a state championship berth.  MLive
  • Flint-area high school baseball teams are set to begin district play on May 21 with thirty-one teams competing; schedules show games on May 26 at Joe Pitock Field & Genesee High School and additional matchups on May 30.  MLive
  • The Pistons, leading the conference semifinals (2-1 over the Cavaliers), will face the Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals if they win the series, with games possibly starting as early as May 17. They will have homecourt advantage in Detroit.  MLive
