COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Greater Flint Community Safety Collaborative held a session on violence Wednesday — a larger-than-usual group of community members and Sergeant Paul Spann discussed youth gang violence and ways to keep Flint safe.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Halo Burger, a 100-year-old chain, reopened its downtown location on April 27 with a celebration that honored its legacy; meanwhile, Soggy Bottom Bar closed indefinitely after owner Steven Tessmer died on May 6, with family planning its reopening after a period of mourning.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • County officials approved a committee on Wednesday to study a proposed Sports and Entertainment Commission aimed at boosting the local economy. The review will explore options such as a multi-purpose sports complex to spur job growth and support local businesses.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twelve college graduates were celebrated on Tuesday at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library as the Flint Promise program honored local students with affordable education support and mentoring (the program also helps connect graduates with job opportunities).  ABC 12

FINANCE NEWS

  • A lottery ticket buyer on Flint's north side won a $1 million jackpot on Tuesday after purchasing a winning ticket at Liquor Wheel on Clio Road. The winner has one year to claim the prize from Michigan Lottery headquarters, and two more top prizes remain available.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Genesee County Land Bank said it had demolished over 10,000 blighted properties since 2004 to clear space for new housing, the Berston Field House expansion, and community gardens. The milestone marks a key step in efforts to revitalize the area.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Gov. Whitmer reappointed Flint-based Kettering University president Dr. Robert McMahan to the MEDC Executive Committee on April 6; his term runs through April 5, 2030 (he will guide business growth and talent development in the region).  MLive
