COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members are cleaning the parking lot of the former Zimmerman Center School today at 10 a.m. after volunteers removed hundreds of gallons of trash and invite locals to join (gloves required).  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint postal workers joined professional dog trainer Hector Hernandez on Thursday at the Flint Post Office to show how quickly a dog attack can occur during mail deliveries + they urged pet owners to secure their dogs to keep carriers safe.  ABC 12
  • The Mott Foundation awarded 50 checks of $1,926 each in its first round of Youth Choice Awards to organizations including Invest-N-Youth Foundation, Dye Elementary School, Communities First, The Good Samaritan Project and St. Paul Lutheran Church and School this week. Round two will be announced in the fall.  ABC 12
  • SNAP shoppers can earn up to $50 daily through the expanded Double Up Food Bucks program, which now matches benefits for fresh and frozen produce. A garden kit event is on May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Neighborhood Engagement Hub (3216 Martin Luther King Ave).  MLive
  • Back to the Bricks launches the season with a swap meet at Crossroads Village today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Genesee Township where vendors register on site and enjoy free parking; a car show follows tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free registration and donations accepted.  MLive

  • Soggy Bottom Bar will soon reopen under new management in Flint—its new team is preparing to bring back a popular local spot after the bar closed following owner Steven Tessmer's sudden death, and it is hiring bartenders and servers.  ABC 12
  • Two Wendy’s locations in Lapeer & Mundy Township have closed permanently as the chain downsizes amid falling sales. The closures are part of a broader move that saw the number of Michigan Wendy’s drop from 206 to 196.  MLive
  • Halo Burger and Cops & Doughnuts have joined forces to launch Foodie Fridays, a new venture bringing local food favorites to the community. The partnership was announced May 15 and will offer Flint residents unique dining options.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longway Planetarium debuts Shark Kingdom today, an immersive show where visitors follow three marine biologists as they explore shark habitats worldwide. The family show runs Tuesdays through Sundays at 4 p.m. with extra matinee screenings on weekends (1 p.m.).  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools has launched a Parent & Guardian Communication Protocol to help families and staff quickly connect to the right department for academic, transportation, enrollment, athletic & operational queries. The guide is available on the district website to streamline communication.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trey McKenney, the Flint native who helped Michigan win a national title, was honored on May 14 in a local celebration where Mayor Sheldon Neeley presented him with a key + his community cheered his ongoing journey toward future championships.  MLive
  • Heritage won its Division 1 boys lacrosse regional semifinal on Thursday at Flint's Atwood Stadium, beating Flint Powers 13-10 and moving into the championship game on Wednesday at Midland Dow. Cole Newman led with three goals and seven assists as the Hawks improved to a 9-7 record.  MLive
