  • Catholic Charities Flint has announced Operation Welcome Home — an event at Sacred Heart Veteran Village to honor veterans — set to take place soon.  ABC 12
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters is hosting its 51st Golf Fore Kids’ Sake outing on June 22 at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc Township at 9 a.m. Proceeds support local mentoring and a raffle features $1,000, $500, and $250 prizes.  MLive
  • Genesee County officials previewed America 250 celebrations (with fireworks, historical displays, and mobile passbooks for redeemable coins) in a meeting last week. Additional details will be shared at a press conference on May 28.  MLive

  • Flint Township’s planning commission approved a new drive-thru for 7 Brew at 4415 Corunna Road on May 14—this $500,000 project will remove the old Krispy Kreme and build a no-indoor seating shop offering over 20,000 customizable drink combos.  MLive

  • Carman-Ainsworth held its 'A Night in Rio' prom at UM-Flint Riverfront Conference Center on Saturday, May 16—about 200 students danced and crowned Brian James III as king and A’Layah Houston as queen.  MLive

  • A Genesee County woman won $1 million on Cinco de Mayo after buying scratch-off tickets at Liquor Wheel on Clio Road in Flint; she chose a one-time lump sum of about $693,000 to buy a house for her parents plus a car and save the remainder.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Gas prices spiked across Michigan as Flint drivers paid $4.81 per gallon on Monday, May 18, while AAA data showed rates from $4.41 in Delta to over $5.00 in Chippewa counties - a rise of 11 cents in the past week amid refinery issues and hints of possible relief from restarts.  MLive

  • Genesee County approved a $604,227 contract with Lansing-based Wieland to manage the new $12M recycling center at the old McDonald Dairy site on Chavez Drive in Flint — rejecting $1.6M design plans for a motor pool and warehouse — amid funding concerns that may be resolved with grants and future fees.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Genesee County Sheriff's Office paramedics have launched a new whole blood program that lets deputies carry critical transfusions to trauma scenes. The program partners with the American Red Cross and has already helped save a Davison resident by treating severe bleeding.  Mid-Michigan Now

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A 39-year-old Genesee County woman won a $1 million jackpot playing Michigan Lottery at Liquor Wheel (4117 Clio Road) and plans to spoil her parents with a new house and car after choosing a lump sum payout.  MLive

  • Flint-area track and field regional meets on the weekend awarded 46 individual titles as Dryden swept boys' and girls' team wins. Several local runners secured state finals spots by meeting early qualifying marks or finishing among the top two places.  MLive
  • Goodrich sophomore Anna Light posted a .516 average and 36 stolen bases this season, and she is set to lead her team in today's doubleheader against Midland. Head coach Don Peters praises her triple threat skills that boost the team's success.  MLive
