COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies has set aside $140,000 for venison-collection events that will fight child hunger, strengthen food pantries & reduce deer numbers. The program will offer free deer processing to help families in need.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters held its 51st Golf Fore Kids Sake tournament on May 20 in Flint to raise funds for youth mentoring programs—organizers said community members enjoyed a friendly, competitive day on the course.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flint’s youth film festival has rebranded as the Vehicle City Film Festival to mark its 10th anniversary and now welcomes filmmakers of all ages. The four-day event runs Sept. 24-27 (with screenings, workshops, and networking) to boost local film culture.  MLive
  • A free screening of the mini-doc HeART to Canvas is held at 5:30 p.m. Wed, May 27 at First Presbyterian Church on 746 S. First St. The film shows how families affected by violence worked with local artists to create healing portraits & a panel will discuss the artwork's impact.  MLive
  • The Flint Monster Society will host a five-hour event on Saturday, May 23 at Flint Local 432, offering local vendors + live acoustic music by Not a Cult, Dr. Cujo and Gustine. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. and is open to the public with limited vendor space.  MLive
  • Comedian DeRay Davis will perform his stand-up routine at the FIM Capitol Theatre in downtown Flint at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 22; ticket prices start at $40 (discounted to $30 for Genesee County residents) and the show is for adults only.  MLive
  • KC’s Dayfest will bring ’90s nostalgia to downtown Flint on Sunday, May 24 from 3-10 p.m. in the 400 block of Buckham Alley, featuring live DJs, karaoke, games, food vendors & an after-party at Levels Sports Bar and Grill; tickets cost $20 and more are available online.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA said Michigan gas prices average $4.77 a gallon ahead of the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, compared to $4.55 nationwide. Gasoline production increased last week + prices remain 11 cents higher, raising concerns among local businesses that rely on summer tourism.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Genesee Intermediate School District and University of Michigan-Flint will host two math and data science events on May 29 at the Riverfront Conference Center and UM-Flint campus. Educators, policymakers, and high school students will benefit from expert talks and hands-on activities with career insights.  Flint Beat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Genesee Conservation District is set to plant 400 trees across parks, vacant lots and school properties in Flint starting soon. The trees are stored at The Yard on Fenton Road by the Genesee County Land Bank.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Temporary traffic lights are in place on the North Road bridge in Fenton Township as crews work to install a water monitoring station. The lights will be removed each night and the project is set to finish by noon tomorrow.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services warns residents and visitors to avoid foam on lakes, rivers and streams as summer approaches—foam may contain PFAS chemicals, so anyone who touches it should rinse off immediately, and pet owners should bathe their animals.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Goodrich sophomore Kayla Shellenbarger won the 400, 800, and 1600 at the FML meet on May 8 at Swartz Creek High School, leading her team to a co-championship with Owosso. She also claimed regional titles and local Athlete of the Week honors & recorded top Division 2 times.  MLive
  • The Michigan high school baseball tournament district play begins this week as a report names 25 Flint-area players to watch. Flint Powers Catholic is highlighted as the only local team ranked No. 20 (with strong performances noted among other underdog teams).  MLive
