COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several mid-Michigan communities will honor Memorial Day with parades, races, and ceremonies scheduled from May 23 to May 27 to remember fallen military personnel. In Flint, Catholic Charities will host a Memorial Day Cookout from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 26—set at the North End Soup Kitchen near the new veteran housing project under construction.  MLive
  • Brandon Corder will revive Beats X BBQ for its sixth year this Memorial Day weekend with food, DJs, and vendors at Tenacity Brewing on May 25th from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. An after party will follow in Burton from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. (sponsored by South Flint Plaza Cannabis) and tickets are $17.85 each or $28.52 for both parts, with free admission for children 12 and under (ticket sales are expected to be brisk).  MLive
  • On Tuesday, residents gathered at the Flint Public Library to share ideas for Flint's new state park at Chevy Commons, which will be Michigan’s 104th state park and the first in Genesee County. DNR liaison Andrew Cole said the park—funded by $30 million in ARPA funds—may include features like an adventure mountain, water play areas, a zipline, and a music grove.  ABC 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 20-year-old man was in critical condition after his Jeep stopped on M-15 north of Goodrich in Atlas Township early Wednesday when a garbage truck struck his vehicle at 5:30 a.m.—officials said the truck driver sustained minor injuries—and crews closed the highway between Maple and Hill roads to investigate.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crystal Cooper’s lawsuit saying gross negligence by two firefighters — the city and its fire department — moves forward after a Michigan Court of Appeals did not dismiss her case linked to the 2022 house fire that killed her sons. Attorney Todd Flood said the ruling shows the case has enough evidence, and a trial has not been set yet.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Governor Whitmer delivered a 'Road Ahead Flint' speech on May 21 at Kettering University and outlined her plan to bring a semiconductor fab to Michigan by the end of next year. Flint leaders, including Mayor Sheldon Neeley, said the city is preparing sites and infrastructure to attract high-skill manufacturing jobs—efforts already seen at the Flint Commerce Center.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • McLaren Flint has finished a $61 million expansion that added 13,735 square feet of new clinical care space to the Karmanos Cancer Institute and installed a new main entrance canopy. The expansion will let the hospital add proton therapy units + boost patient capacity in the near future.  Mid-Michigan Now
