COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Genesee County Land Bank began demolishing a former funeral home on Jamieson St. Thursday to clear space for a new football field at Berston Field House, supported by a State Land Bank grant.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Memorial Day weekend will bring several ceremonies in the area, including a service at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Sunday and a parade at McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park on Monday. Additional events in Burton, Linden, and Lapeer will offer races, picnics, and tributes to honor veterans.  MLive
  • Catholic Charities hosted an open house at Sacred Heart Veteran Village on East Stewart Avenue to welcome residents ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Two veterans moved in last month, with two more set to join, and the village offers transitional housing and support services such as counseling and VA care.  ABC 12

  • Soggy Bottom Bar reopened on Tuesday, May 19 at 613 Martin Luther King Avenue with holiday hours until regular service resumes after Memorial Day; manager Shelly Pendleton & her team will host Jazz Night on May 26 and trivia on May 28 while keeping the menu unchanged.  MLive
  • The Wholesale Depot Kitchen & Bath on Birch Drive is hosting its grand opening on Saturday, May 23, with a car show, food trucks and more; the event runs until 6 p.m. and invites the community to join the festivities.  Mid-Michigan Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • MLive Media Group won 58 awards, including 23 first place honors, at the SPJ Detroit Excellence in Journalism Awards on Wednesday, May 20, at the San Marino Club in Troy (this event honored digital and print reporting excellence across several categories with Flint Journal among the winners).  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Fenton Food and Beverage chose Fenton on Tuesday for its plant-based milk project after receiving state incentives. The firm will retrofit the 5-acre former Bunzl site near US-23 and I-75 to create 96 jobs and invest up to $56.2 million (with a $960K grant and $168K tax break).  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Flint Finance Committee voted to recommend Gross Construction for improvements at St. John Street Memorial Park after canceling a past contract for inadequate performance. The project will add trail widening, new paths, parking, a pavilion, and a playground, and it now goes to City Council for final approval.  ABC 12
