COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Kearsley Community Schools held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday at Kearsley High School to open a new recreation center that includes a full-size basketball gym + indoor track, weight and cardio rooms, and expanded training and locker rooms for both students and families. The center is set to host school events and community activities after being funded by a May 2022 bond and built from June 2023. ABC 12
- ➤ Local leaders met at Rankin St. and MLK Ave. on Thursday to share updates on cleanup efforts after last week’s high winds. Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said help is available for debris removal and that a resolution for $200k in funds to support tree removal will be proposed to City Council — a measure aimed at reducing future storm damage. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Communities First, Inc. will host the free 2025 Levitt AMP Flint Music Series from May 27 to September 30, featuring 10 concerts by bands from Chicago, Ukraine, Boston and other places in Vehicle City. The concerts will be held at public spots such as Totem Bookstore and Flint City Hall—food trucks, games and community resources will also be available. Mid-Michigan Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Flint students became published authors on May 22 when the Thrive On program at McMonagle Elementary launched a book featuring essays and artwork from fourth through sixth graders—each student received a copy and read their page aloud at a special after-school session. Mid-Michigan Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A recount by the Genesee County Clerk’s Office on May 22 confirmed Flint’s special primary results and advanced Beverly Biggs-Leavy and A.C. Dumas to the general election on Aug. 5. The seat had become vacant after Councilmember Quincy Murphy died in September 2024 following a candidate’s request for a recount. Flint Beat
- ➤ Five Michigan drivers received up to $758 each for pothole-caused vehicle damage under MITA’s Pothole Payback Contest, with Flint’s Dequontay Fisher among those affected—he hit rough roads that split his tire and dented his wheel—and MITA will choose five more winners in May and June as it reviews more than 200 similar entries. - ➤ Genesee County Health Department confirmed on May 22 that the county’s first rabies case of 2025 is a dead bat that does not pose a threat to the public. Officials advise residents to avoid contact with wild animals and seek treatment if exposed (pets should be vaccinated as a precaution). MLive
