- ➤ Flint small businesses are receiving funds from GM's Moving Flint Forward Small Business Grant Program—run by the Flint and Genesee County Economic Alliance—to upgrade and grow, as entrepreneurs like Tammie Mathis of Tee's Plentiful Salads received $10,000 for remodeling in her first year and $5,000 more this year, with additional funds set to be distributed when requirements are met. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An 18-year-old mother, Luvina McCann, was killed in a shooting on Flint's west side on April 27 at a home on Thomas Street—she was 13 weeks pregnant and her family is seeking information to help the investigation. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ A Flint man, Dequan Martez Currie, 29, was charged with armed robbery after using a handgun to rob the Mobil station at 1005 Clyde Road in Hartland Township around 3:15 a.m. on May 2 and was arraigned on May 21 with a $500,000 cash bond—he is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and using a firearm during a felony and is set to appear in court on June 3. - ➤ The LAFF Pathway Paddle — Pedal Festival is scheduled for June 14 and will offer paddle and pedal events for Flint residents. Organizers are expected to share more details about the event soon. ABC 12
- ➤ Communities First Inc.—based in Flint—is hosting the 2025 Levitt AMP Flint Music Series—running through September—to present local music in the area. ABC 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 22, Davison High School seniors walked from their high school to Thomson Elementary with family and neighbors watching in a long-standing tradition. The 379 graduates will meet again for graduation on June 9 at Dort Financial Center in Flint — a final moment to honor their school years. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A recount by the Genesee County Clerk’s Office confirmed the primary election results for Flint’s Third Ward City Council seat, showing Beverly Biggs-Leavy and A.C. Dumas tied at 165 votes—while Lashawn Johnson received 162 votes. Both tied candidates will move forward to the August election to fill the seat left vacant since Quincy Murphy’s passing. ABC 12
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Transportation will repair concrete pavement on I-75 in Genesee County between the Saginaw County line and M-57 starting June 1st until June 8th—traffic will experience single-lane and shoulder closures during the project. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ On May 22, several Flint-area high school teams recorded wins as Byron girls soccer rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat West Bloomfield Frankel Jewish Academy 4-2 in overtime with Zadie Schmidt scoring a hat trick that earned them a spot in the MHSAA district semifinals against Clarkston Everest Collegiate on May 27. Other contests saw strong efforts in baseball and softball by teams such as Flint Powers Catholic, Imlay City, and Montrose—adding to an exciting day for local high school sports. MLive
