COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Flint residents gathered for the second annual Silence the Violence walk Saturday afternoon to honor victims of gun violence. Hill Harper and Pastor Barry Randolph led the event that started at the Sylvester Broome Building and ended at Dewey Park on Saginaw Street—upcoming walks will be held on June 8 in Flint and June 28 in Saginaw.  ABC 12
  • Sacred Heart Veteran Village in Flint honored veterans with a Memorial Day cookout run by the Knights of Columbus in downtown Flint on Monday. The event, hosted by Catholic Charities’ transitional housing program, offered a simple thank you to those who served — upholding a well-practiced local tradition.  Mid-Michigan Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, a crash on Flint’s north side trapped a pick-up truck under an SUV near the intersection of Pierson Rd. and Cloverlawn Dr.—an ambulance arrived as Flint PD was expected to give more details.  Mid-Michigan Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Allegiant Air began a new direct flight from Flint's Bishop International Airport to Portland when it departed at 1:08 p.m. Friday — a celebration with cupcakes and a balloon arch marked the occasion — and plans to operate the service on Mondays and Fridays.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Horace Peterson, 72, was freed on May 14 after spending 52 years in prison for a 1973 second-degree murder conviction tied to a Flint store robbery, and he celebrated his release at Prime 810 with family and friends while maintaining his innocence.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In Genesee County, Genesee Career Institute honored Memorial Day with its JROTC program that trained more than 200 cadets to become future leaders. The program is part of the Genesee Intermediate School District—its focus remains on building leadership and service skills.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • One in six U.S. youth faces mental health challenges, and the COVID-19 pandemic has made these issues worse. Local martial arts instructor Emily Musolf says practicing karate gives kids physical exercise and self-discipline — releasing chemicals that help the brain work better.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint woman LaDonna Wyatt turned her breast cancer journey into a health business at the Flint Farmers’ Market—she developed organic teas after reading about green tea's benefits and began giving them away before expanding to a permanent stand. She and her husband Ples now operate Brook’s Tea on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Flint Beat
