- ➤ The Center of Hope in Flint sought donations of personal care items on May 27 to help those in need. The center urged residents to contribute what they can to support the local homeless population. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ A new $305,000 playground and greenspace opened in May along Avenue B in Flint, designed with input from former Atherton East residents and funded by the federal Choice Neighborhoods Grant. The project features murals by local artist Charlie Boike and aims to serve as a community hub—encouraging outdoor activity and neighborly connection. MLive
- ➤ Metro Community Development Inc. and Genesee County Habitat for Humanity announced they will merge to expand affordable housing services for low-income residents in Genesee County. The merger is in its final stages as the boards approved a letter of intent – starting a due diligence review for staff integration and branding – to secure its future viability. MLive
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ 810 Fashions held its spring show at Flint Farmers’ Market on May 26 in front of a sold-out crowd of about 200 people. The event featured 34 models and eight designers showing seven fashion lines, and CEO Adriana Lanice said she expects future shows to continue selling out with the next show scheduled for August 10. - ➤ Communities First Inc. launched the Levitt AMP Music Series in downtown Flint when free concerts began on May 27 in the Totem Books backyard, and the series will run every other Tuesday through Sept 30 — a special event with Chambers DesLauriers is set for Aug 1 at Flint City Hall. - ➤ At Senior Honors Night, nine seniors at the International Academy of Flint received $2,500 scholarships from the Money Masters Scholarship Program+ awarded by Financial Plus Credit Union and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis to boost money skills for minority youth. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ Goodrich freshman Kayla Shellenbarger earned four state finals bids by winning races at a May 17 regional championship at North Branch High School (3,264 votes were cast in her favor) and was named Flint-area Athlete of the Week for May 12-18. She will compete in the MHSAA Division 2 state finals on May 31 at Hamilton High School. MLive
- ➤ Mott Community College ended its season as top players were honored in both baseball and softball. Montrose graduate Arika Hines was named conference Player and Freshman of the Year while Lake Fenton’s Carson Haddad earned first-team baseball honors—Mott posted 40 wins and 11 losses in softball and 25 wins and 20 losses in baseball—highlighting a strong overall performance.
