  • Flint Soap Box Derby will roll back into town on May 31 at Chevy Commons, where local students will race hand-built cars from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event features schools from Southeast Michigan and builds on a tradition revived in 2019 (marking its fifth consecutive year).  Flint Beat
  • On May28, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan launched its Summer Feeding Program in Flint — providing meals to families and children. The program will run through the summer to help those facing food insecurity.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ladonna Wyatt started Brook's Tea at Flint Farmers' Market after her 2007 breast cancer battle led her to try healthier food options. She and her husband moved their tea business indoors in October 2022 & now offer four tea types with nearly 50,000 samples each year.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tomorrow, Vinyl Vibes will bring local music, food, and fun to Peoples Church at 503 Garland St. from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Local DJs, including DJ Eduardo and Scizzahandz, will spin vinyl tracks — setting a lively tone for summer — while local vendors like Gordo and Flaco’s Authentic Tacos and Sweet Home Argentina serve food with free entry for those holding a ticket from Queens’ Provisions.  MLive
  • Michigan's Talent Fest in Flint will take place Saturday, May 31 at Victory Tabernacle at 7 p.m.—the event will bring local talent together for a night of live performances.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At the Mackinac Policy Conference in Flint, the Michigan Growth Office announced the new Make MI Home program to keep college and university students in Genesee by linking them with local employers. The program will offer housing or relocation support along with non-monetary benefits — such as coworking space and networking opportunities — to help students pursue high-demand fields like healthcare, education, and STEM.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan's MDHHS announced that the Summer Electronic Benefit Program resumes this month to help low-income families buy food during summer break—eligible families will receive $120 per child on EBT cards, either sent by mail or added to existing cards, and funds will expire 122 days after distribution.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • The city, Flint Housing Commission, and three oversight board members denied claims by former executive director Harold Ince Jr. that his firing after he started an investigation into board member Geraldine Redmond was retaliatory and violated his rights—attorneys said his lawsuit is barred by the statute of limitations and protected by sovereign immunity.  MLive
  • A bipartisan group of Michigan Representatives sent a letter Wednesday urging that funding for the Flint Registry be maintained at its current $5 million level in the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bill to continue its work assisting residents affected by the water crisis.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Montrose sophomore Addy Stiverson broke Michigan’s shot put record and the national record for sophomores at the Frankenmuth Invitational. She will compete on May 31 at Kent City High School for a state title and aims to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics—her future plans build on her strong track record.  MLive
