COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Renovations at Berston Field House on Flint’s north side are nearly complete as part of a $30 million expansion that adds 57,000 square feet, a new gym triple the size of the old one & multiple basketball courts with an elevated track. The center will open to the public in 2026 & aims to become a community hub for generations.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy Coombs, the ex-boyfriend of Baby Cain's guardian, pleaded no contest on charges including second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse after feeding meth to the 1-year-old in Flint Township + he will face sentencing on July 1 with a potential life term.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flint is set to mark its 53rd annual Juneteenth with 23 free events over 23 days from May 31 through June 22. The celebration—titled 'Celebrating 160 Years of Black History'—honors the late Mother E. Hill DeLoney and is led by DeWaun Robinson of Black Lives Matter Flint with a parade ending at Max Brandon Park inviting all community members.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools hosts its annual Kindergarten Round-Up today at the FCS Administration Building (923 E. Kearsley Street) where families can register for kindergarten and enjoy festivities. Enrollment runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and activities, including a story walk, free food, giveaways, and a bounce house, are set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Flint Beat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • EGLE awarded $1.1 million in grants for 55 scrap tire drop-off events to reduce fire hazards and mosquito breeding. Mid-Michigan agencies benefited, with Arenac Conservation District in Standish receiving $21,000 and Flint’s Genesee Metropolitan Planning Commission allocated $9,500 — officials say the funding will offer affordable tire recycling options — as community events are planned.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than three weeks ago the fund manager for the Flint water crisis settlement resigned and was replaced by Epiq Class Action and Claims Solutions — a move approved last week by Special Master Deborah Greenspan. Residents remain unsure when they will get their share of the over $600 million settlement.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Flint gave away free water faucet filtration systems at the Clio Road Service Center on Thursday, including extra cartridges and lead abatement information from the Office of Public Health. Residents who missed the event may still get a free system at City Hall Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Flint boxer Sardius Simmons, 31, won his second National Golden Gloves title on May 17 in Tulsa—he earned a 3-2 split decision over Gilbert Kabamba to avenge his 2024 loss and become the only Michigan fighter to reach the final round.  MLive
