  • Swartz Creek's Hometown Days festival, which started Thursday, offers inclusive family fun with carnival rides, games, a mobile petting zoo, silent auctions and a car show. The event continues through Sunday in Swartz Creek (an opportunity for everyone to join in local festivities).  Mid-Michigan Now
  • A 7-year-old boy organized a lemonade stand at Zerka's in Burton today to help a local veteran pay his utility bill while he recovers from surgery and remains out of work for four months. Community members stopped by and bought lemonade ($2 each) in support of his neighbor.  ABC 12

  • Clean Express Auto Wash held its grand opening at 4515 Corunna Road on Friday, May 29 and offered free Ceramic 4 Ultra washes until June 7. The location launched a Wash Smart Unlimited Club special (50% off for three months) with each membership supporting a $10 donation to HSGC.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan-Flint held Data Science Day yesterday to give students hands-on STEM experiences in artificial intelligence + robotics while teachers and local leaders hosted a conference on improving STEM education.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Grand Blanc Community Schools held their graduation on Thursday, May 28, where graduates shared thanks for teachers, families, and community bonds (including a Sept. 28 challenge) as they looked ahead to new beginnings.  MLive
  • Students from Carman-Ainsworth High celebrated their graduation at the Dort Financial Center on Thursday, May 28. A total of 157 graduates in caps + gowns marked this milestone amid support from family and friends.  Flint Beat
  • Country singer Randy Houser performed a show for inmates as he visited Genesee County Jail today and saw the Ignite University program move to the 5th floor—complete with a music studio to help more inmates receive education and find jobs.  Mid-Michigan Now

  • Genesee Health System will host a free barbershop event featuring haircuts & mental health talks on Monday, June 1, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Unlimited Potential Barber & Beauty Salon on Beecher Road in Flint. Smoke-n-Gates BBQ will provide free food for the community.  MLive

  • Flint’s Mott Foundation Centennial Family Fun Days will feature a free 3-on-3 basketball tournament on June 6 and 7 at the Flint Cultural Center campus; registration for players (ages 11-18) is open until May 31, with winners earning a chain necklace and all participants receiving a reversible jersey.  MLive
