- ➤ Racers and students celebrated the 5th year of the Flint Soap Box Derby at Chevy Commons near Kettering University Saturday (with cars built for the All-American Soapbox Derby World Championship). Kevin Cronin said the event focused on community and fun while adding that Cronin Derby Downs (originally opened in 1969) will reopen as a multi-purpose venue this summer. Mid-Michigan Now

- ➤ Papa Al’s American Mexican Restaurant and Bakery is moving into the former Wah Nam building at 4492 Richfield Road in Genesee Township to serve Mexican and American comfort food as well as freshly baked goods. Owner Alfonso Amaya, a longtime Flint resident who saved during a 48-year career at General Motors, plans to open by mid-June—crediting his parents for inspiring many recipes. MLive

- ➤ Crime Stoppers of Flint & Genesee County is offering a $2,500 reward for tips that lead to an arrest in the shooting death of 18-year-old Lav’ina McCann, who was shot inside a vehicle on the west side on April 27 while leaving an after-prom party. MLive

- ➤ The Gloria Coles Flint Public Library kicked off its Summer Reading Challenge today with live music, a petting zoo, horseback rides, and a cowboy reading stories to children. Library staff said the program will run all summer with daily events like games, crafts, nature walks, movies, and live music to help kids enjoy reading and learning. ABC 12

- ➤ Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, a Flint doctor who had a brain tumor removed six months ago, will be inaugurated as the first Indian American leader of the American Medical Association on June 10th—he plans to use his experience as both doctor and patient to improve healthcare. Flint Beat
