COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Father Eduardo Lorenzo, a cherished leader in Flint’s Hispanic community who fled Cuba in 1961 and served at Our Lady of Guadalupe, passed away this morning at 93. His funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m.—the church that has long been a home for many will honor his lasting legacy.  Mid-Michigan Now

CRIME NEWS

  • The Flint Police Department and Michigan State Police ticketed protesters and towed vehicles during a protest on Saginaw Street in downtown Flint on Sunday afternoon—officers said the actions were taken after safety warnings were ignored.  ABC 12
  • A shooting at Vibez Night Club early Sunday left a 36-year-old man dead and a 44-year-old man injured—police are asking for any leads since no suspect is in custody.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Labor halted contracts at 99 Job Corps centers, including a center in Flint that served 147 students who relied on the program. U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet and local officials said the shutdown was cruel and damaging and are working with community leaders to secure emergency funding for the displaced students.  MLive
  • Today is the final deadline for Flint City Council to adopt the annual budget as they meet at Flint City Hall at 5:30 p.m.—failure to pass the proposal may lead to layoffs and disruption of essential services.  Mid-Michigan Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Flint-area track and field athletes earned all-state honors at the MHSAA state finals held over the weekend. Goodrich girls finished second in Division 2 while Montrose’s Addy Stiverson won first in shot-put and discus, and Flint Powers Catholic finished seventh among boys in Division 2.  MLive
  • Flint-area high school baseball teams won district titles over the weekend—Fenton, Davison, Clio, Linden, and Mt. Morris each posted strong pitching performances—and the district play of the state tournament ended.  MLive
