CRIME NEWS

  • Flint police reviewed video footage from a City Council meeting on June 2 after a scuffle between audience members and officers forced a shutdown—Mayor Sheldon Neeley said anyone involved would face criminal charges.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • An underdog sports film will film its climactic scene at Flint’s Dort Financial Center on June 11 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Extras are invited to join the shoot that will include cast members such as Eminem’s brother and the daughters of Clint Eastwood and Jean-Claude Van Damme *with a DJ and comedians providing added entertainment*.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday evening, 114 students from Accelerated Learning Academy and Southwestern Classical Academy graduated at Whiting Auditorium as they moved their tassels amid cheers. Valedictorian James Horn urged his peers to cherish their village — a call to remember support systems — as teachers and keynote speaker Ernest Mack celebrated a new beginning for Flint’s future leaders.  MLive
  • Kearsley’s first ever Project SEARCH class finished their program at Meijer on Center Road in Burton, where six special needs students learned important work skills. The program started in September last year—Meijer will help all graduates find jobs.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A civil rights lawsuit was filed against Flint officials including Mayor Sheldon Neeley, Chief Terence Green and three other officers after a protest on Saginaw Street ended with tickets issued and vehicles impounded. The suit brought by Council candidate Beverly Biggs-Leavy, her husband Terence Leavy and activist Jedidiah Brown accuses the officials of using excessive force and working to stop a peaceful assembly.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan coalition Protect MI Care testified at the Michigan Senate Health Policy Committee hearing in Lansing on June 4 at 12:30 p.m.—the group warned that proposed federal Medicaid cuts could reduce support by nearly $700 billion over the next decade.  Mid-Michigan Now
