CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Michigan farm contractor was ordered to pay $583K—after a jury found he violated anti-trafficking, wage and contract laws in a federal trial brought by five Guatemalan men in June. MLive
- ➤ Flint police are asking the public to help locate a missing 15-year-old girl named Breasia Robinson—last seen near the River Village Apartments on June 8th. Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Troy Terrance Murphy and Malik Shandae Jones were found guilty in 2021 for fatally shooting 32‐year‐old William Laquan Woodward on Franklin Ave in Flint—Jones received a life sentence while Murphy will be sentenced on July 21. Mid-Michigan Now
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The International Center of Greater Flint received a $100K grant from the Michigan Growth Office to launch Genesee Future Forward—a program that offers housing and relocation help, coworking space access, guest passes to cultural sites, and structured networking for out-of-state graduates in high-demand fields such as healthcare, education and STEM. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Flint's Center for Educational Excellence has joined Harvard's Success Planning Network to give each student a better plan and fix high rates of missing school. - ➤ Mott Community College in Flint is looking for a new full-time Board of Trustees attorney after Sean FitzGerald resigned over a conflict involving Trustee Janet Couch — the faculty union president called the turnover alarming as the college faces a lawsuit over the matter. MLive
- ➤ The Flint City Council passed the new fiscal year budget late Wednesday evening—nine days after the June 2 deadline, saving 550 jobs and avoiding a shutdown. The council set dates for spending American Rescue funds and expects more revenue from income tax returns when the fiscal year begins on July 1. ABC 12
- ➤ Flint firefighters working on the new ambulance service raise concerns about 24-hour shifts with no breaks—issues include low pay, lapsing alert subscriptions, and removal of automated CPR devices.
