COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The International Center of Greater Flint hosted an event at Gloria Coles Flint Public Library to share findings from its Global Flint Initiative gathered by three University of Michigan-Flint professors over several months. Local organizations discussed ways to better support newcomers — marking the start of a long-term effort to promote inclusion. ABC 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Flint men Troy Murphy, 24, and Malik Jones, 29, were found guilty of first-degree murder and felony firearm charges in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting that killed 32-year-old William Laquan Woodward on April 25, 2021 — the verdict was reached at Genesee County Circuit Court. MLive
- ➤ Two Flint men, Troy Murphy and Malik Jones, were found guilty of first-degree murder for shooting 32-year-old William Laquan Woodward on Franklin near Mable Avenue in April 2021. They will be sentenced on July 21 before Judge Chris Christenson—Jones faces a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole while Murphy will receive a different sentence. ABC 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kettering University in Flint said it will launch a new College of Engineering and Computer Science, a School of Foundational Studies & an expanded Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science on June 23. The expansion is meant to support hands-on learning and strengthen industry ties. Mid-Michigan Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a Flint City Hall news conference on June 13th, Mayor Sheldon Neeley said the city is not in charge of distributing $626-million in water crisis settlement funds. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and special master Deborah Greenspan will manage the payments and answer questions by phone (866-536-0717) while residents learn more in late summer or early fall. - ➤ Flint City Council approved a balanced budget that averted a shutdown — the move saved more than 500 jobs; city leaders said they will work together as they prepare for the new fiscal year starting July 1. ABC 12
- ➤ On June 11, Genesee County’s Board of Commissioners sent a request for $50,000 in both 2025 and 2026 to support the Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc Township—an event that brings in over $20 million in economic impact with thousands of visitors, and a final vote will come next week. The board also approved an initial $15,000 request for Flint’s 51st Annual Gus Macker scheduled for July 25–27. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, a Flint-based otolaryngologist, was sworn in as the 180th president of the American Medical Association on June 11—making him the first physician of Indian heritage to lead the organization. He beat an 8-centimeter brain tumor diagnosed last November and continues to perform surgeries and see patients in Flint while serving a one-year term. MLive
