COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A Flint senior living community completed a $45 million renovation that upgraded housing units and common areas — including a new commercial kitchen at 700 Court St. — to offer affordable, accessible living while celebrating McFarlan Home’s 100th anniversary in a ribbon cutting this month. - ➤ Sergeant Norm Hoydic, who served the Flint Police Department for 37 years, died last Friday at 65. His death leaves the community mourning a dedicated officer (admired for his long service). Mid-Michigan Now
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Celeste Baker, the victim’s mother, forgave two men—Deaje Mayfield and Zachary Edwards—who entered no contest and pleaded guilty at Genesee County Circuit Court for killing her daughter in a 2022 Flint shooting. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Flint officials said a long-blighted church at the corner of Hamilton and Saginaw Streets will be torn down in the next week or two (to remove hazards) and its century-old bell will be saved and preserved (display site pending). Mid-Michigan Now
- ➤ Last Friday, Mayor Sheldon Neeley said he had no control over the $626 million water settlement funds—payments will be determined solely by the US District Court in Detroit, with claimants expected to receive funds in late summer or early fall. ABC 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Flint residents will have free brain health tests on Saturday, June 21 at Insight, 4800 S. Saginaw St. The Capturing Memories Community Brain Health Day will offer cognitive screening, blood tests and telehealth consults for early signs of Alzheimer’s — hosted by Neurogen Biomarking with Insight and Linus Health with only 200 spots available. - ➤ Dr. Bobby Mukkamala of Flint became the first doctor of Indian descent to lead the American Medical Association when he delivered his inaugural address in Chicago last week—he is recovering well from brain tumor surgery and plans to lobby for changes to improve health care. ABC 12
