COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans from Mid-Michigan left Flint Tuesday morning on an Honor Flight to tour war memorials in Washington, D.C. The veterans will return today at 9 p.m. at Bishop International Airport — the trip is organized to honor Michigan heroes.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Flint police are asking for help identifying a man accused of stabbing a dog while trying to carjack an SUV outside the Quick Pick liquor store on West Court Street last March — surveillance video shows him entering the SUV at 10:15 a.m. on March 31.  ABC 12
  • Colanders King II, a 29-year-old who pleaded guilty to armed robbery and weapons charges for robbing three Walgreens stores in Genesee County last October, was sentenced to five to 20 years in prison with an extra two-year term for using a firearm and received credit for 252 days served.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hollywood filmed climactic scenes for the underdog boxing movie Clay at Flint's Dort Financial Center in June 2025, with actor Nathan Mathers—Eminem’s brother—playing a key role as the lead's best friend and trainer. The film, directed by Alexander Wraith, will finish production soon with a planned release about six months from now.  MLive
  • The Midwest Invitational Rodeo was held June 14-15 at the E.A. Cummings Center in Genesee Township where urban cowboys and local fans gathered for rides, food, and music. Participants said the event brought an adrenaline rush and a strong sense of family — connecting traditions with a modern twist.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flint Community Schools announced plans to design a new high school on the former Flint Central campus at 601 Crapo Street using a $750,000 planning grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. District officials said the $125 million project follows a $35.9 million grant and offers new teacher bonuses up to $12,000 — while high school students currently attend Southwestern Classical Academy.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SC Services of Detroit began demolishing the historic Oak Park Methodist Episcopal Church on North Saginaw Street on Monday, June 16, a $200,000 project begun after years of neglect and a 2023 fire. The church was built in 1909 (land donated by Durant and Dort) and only its bell remains (to be stored until a display site is selected).  MLive
  • Flint police Sgt. Norm Hoydic, known for his calming nature and 37 years of service, died on June 13 at age 65. His family (daughter Brooke, son Joshua, step-children Rachel and Jeremy Frey, and brother Michael) remember him for his dedication to keeping Flint safe.  MLive
  • Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet discussed federal funding proposals for mid-Michigan during a press conference in Hemlock—one plan will create a new early childhood center in Hemlock, another will boost violence intervention in Saginaw, and a third will convert Flint Central High School into a modern educational campus for the 2026 budget.  ABC 12
