COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The FIA is hosting a free Juneteenth celebration in Flint tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—an event open to local residents.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mid-Michigan groups have planned free outdoor events this weekend — including Juneteenth celebrations in Flint with a parade and live music and in Saginaw with food trucks, a talent showcase and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Additional activities include a Friday nighttime drone show in Davison Township, a Kick-Off Summer Bash in Swartz Creek and Mott Fest in Flint on Saturday featuring games, craft booths and a beer garden.  MLive
  • The third Live at Carriage Town is scheduled for June 28 and the Sixth Annual Carriage Town Porchfest will be held on July 18 in downtown Flint — organizer Jeff Skigh and performers Twicee and King Cashes will highlight local food and music at these events.  Mid-Michigan Now
  • Residents gathered at UM Flint Community Park to mark Juneteenth with live music, food trucks and cultural performances. A parade began at 5 p.m. at Max Brandon Park and marched downtown while DeWuan Robinson of Black Lives Matter Flint explained the holiday's importance — noting that Black history is American history — and additional events will continue through the weekend.  Mid-Michigan Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mott Community College marked its 25th anniversary Factory Five workshop that teaches students to build kit cars in their own garages, drawing participants from around the world. The monthly class, which holds 15 students, featured global attendees including Ricardo Tellez from Colombia.  Mid-Michigan Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Prosecutors in Flint are upset with a new state police policy enacted last November that sends investigations involving state employees straight to the Attorney General's office instead of local review—Genesee County officials and the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan have raised concerns—and the policy remains in effect.  ABC 12
  • VFW members & Flint City Councilmember Ladel Lewis held a flag dedication at Bassett Park on June 19th despite light rain, with a trumpeter playing Taps as people saluted the flag.  Mid-Michigan Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Genesee County is set to face a $93 million cut in drug recovery funding that will affect local mental health programs. Jennifer McCarty of Genesee Health System said the group will seek other funds like Medicaid and a mental health millage—ensuring essential services stay available.  ABC 12
