COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Flint hosted the 10th annual Flint Water Festival on Independence Day weekend (at the Flat Lot near Saginaw and First) with rides, food and fun for families. The event featured a carnival midway, an outdoor concert with a Bruno Mars tribute band at 7 p.m. Friday and fireworks at dusk on Friday, though rides and food trucks cost money (most activities are free), and it continues today with more family-friendly activities. - ➤ Martez Warren, a Flint pastor and social worker, joined the UM-Flint Police Department in May as a community engagement manager to help residents get the resources they need so they can avoid jail time. He will work to change police practices and build trust+ address the root issues that lead to crime. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police said a 20-year-old man was taken into custody after a deadly double shooting occurred inside The Hair Shop at the intersection of Fenton Road and Major Street on Flint's south side on Thursday+ a 23-year-old man was killed at the scene while a 25-year-old man remains hospitalized with serious injuries as investigators seek tips. ABC 12
- ➤ Dequan Currie, a 29-year-old Flint man, is accused of robbing a Mobil gas station at Clyde Road and U.S. 23 in Hartland Township on May 2 by allegedly using a handgun to force a clerk to hand over cash and cigarettes—detectives from Livingston and Genesee counties arrested him on May 5 and he now faces charges of armed robbery, using a firearm to commit a felony, and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. ABC 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The MTA has proposed a new fixed-bus route along Hill Road to link the downtown Flint transfer station with Meijer, Costco and local schools in Mundy Township. The service will run daily starting at 6:30 a.m. and ending at 11 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday, and township officials are reviewing plans that may require costly improvements such as new sidewalks and bus pull-off lanes.
